Look around you at ANY entity that has a cash flow and you will see that it provides some sort of product or service to people - in short, it fills some HOLE in the marketplace. When one effectively PLUGS this hole and BENEFITS people, then profit and hence, income can be derived from it.
There is no real magic or rocket science involved here. One's success - as gauged by society - is how effectively one has contributed something positive to the community or community at large.
