View Full Version : Focus on your goal

My friends and I are trying to lose weight (aren't we all? :D).
We have different methods and believes when it comes to this. So far they have not really gotten much results. They have only managed to maintain their weight and lose very little.
I on the other hand, have seen good results.
I don't think this has anything to do with what kind of program we are in, rather it's about setting a goal and focusing on achieving it.
You see, my friends' targets are mostly to still be able to look hot when they are in their 40s or 50s. That's quite a large area to focus on and not very realistic, is it? I mean, you have no definite time period and no definite number of kilos you want to lose, so that pretty much leaves you shooting in the dark.
Whereas for me, I have a definite goal to shoot for. I want to lose 8 kilos, preferably, so that is something to focus on. I find that when you have something to focus on, there is a purpose in your efforts.
Suddenly, it's not about wanting to look hot in your 40s or 50s any more, which is a very large area, but about losing 8 kilos, which is more targeted and focused.
That's what I want to stress here. So the next time you are setting a goal make sure that it is something that is not vague, but has a definite target to aim for.
Cheers!

Hey Molly
I couldn't help but agree with you.
When you have something concrete to aim for it makes it easier to achieve rather than a vague 10 or 20 years timeframe.

So guys, anyone care to declare your goals in the goals area?

Hi,
I'd only add that for a goal we must also have a time when we want to reach the target. What we want exactly and when we want it.
All the best,

You are right Success Seeker. With so much information being thrusted in our faces all the time, the trick is to choose the one that suits our lifestyle and personalities and see it through first before trying something else.
Otherwise, all we'll have is a bunch of unfinished projects and no results.

In order to achieve a goal, one must set a realistic goal.
I have a friend who set a goal to lose 5 kg A MONTH early this year as one of her goals in 2008.
Guess what? It's been half a year now and she hasn't even lost 5kg of her weight.
When we set a goal that's out of our reach, we'll feel demotivated and the goal will be as good as nothing.
What do you think?

I agree it needs to be believable. I'm a pretty fit guy and when I try to help my friends lose weight, I always set the bar really low. They do not know that though. They believe it is going to be hard to lose that first five pounds. But when they actually lose more than that, it cranks up the engine. :p

Well Molly, you have the self confidence that you are going to loose weight along with that are your goals.
If your friends had the same confidence in them, then they would have made their goal to lose 10 kilos.
Everyone needs a bit of encouragement given so that they can improve themselves and could discover their life better.

Hey Jessica, thanks for sharing.
You're right. Sometimes people don't have the confidence to achieve their goals so they set really vague ones for themselves. That way, nobody can say for sure whether they have succeeded or not.
Say, if you have friends, who are also interested in self help topics or just want to be amongst people who are motivated to be successful, feel free to invite them to join the forum also.
I'm sure the other members here would love to meet them too.
Cheers!

Actually Self Confidence Means You Have The Confidence That Everything Will Be Going On In Your Favour. Regarding Why Some Are Successful In Achieving Goals Is Because Everybody Wants To Be Successful In Life., But 99% Of The Time We Are Thinking About Failure. So The End Imagination Is Failure. Imagination Is The Most Powerful Energy In Goal Setting. So When You Imagine You Are A Winner You Will Be.....rk, Cochin, India

Molly,
I agree that to reach a goal it must be specific and measurable, but in my experience sometimes that's not enough, especiall with the weight issue. If it was as simple as only being specific about the amount of pounds you want to lose by when, we would all look like Madona.
With weight - there are two more things I would recommend: one is to do some work around limiting beliefs, allowing them to surface and then release them or change them 9The Sedona Method is great for that), and the other is work around finding out what is your subconcious (good) intention in being overweight (for example, protection against sexual abuse). NLP is great for that.
let me know if you or your friends want more help or information about this.
Good Luck,
Michal
